The Sunomata Yokai Hunt
Mission Start Text
Hey, I've got a favor to ask of you.
The truth is, a yokai has run off with my weapon.
For a shiftling such as myself to have been outsmarted by a yokai is shameful, to say the least, but that thing moves fast. Do you think you can help me corner it?
Mission End Text
If you kill the kappa before it jumps in the water: Aha, that's my sickle, no doubt about it! But it's strange, that kappa was really frightened of something. Something other than us.
Well, I guess there's no way of knowing for sure now, so it's not worth worrying about. Thanks for all your help!
If you didn't kill the kappa before it jumps in the water: Ah, thanks! There's no mistaking it, that's the one. A yokai making a kappa steal it for them... That's definitely a new one.
But then a strong yokai bullying a weaker one and making it do their work for them, well, it's not so different from what humans do, right? Still, I won't let that kind of thing happen again on my turf. After all, I'm still the toughest of them all!

The Sunomata Yokai Hunt Walkthrough
Players arrive at the first Kodama shrine of the mission where you'll also find Hachisuka Koroku who will be your companion. The objective is to chase after the Kappa that stole Koroku's weapon. There are no collectibles in this sub-mission such as Kodama, Sudama, Scampuss, Hot Springs, or Locks.
As you head forward, you'll find the yokai that stole his weapon, which is a Kappa. As soon as it sees you, it will run away from you and you'll have to follow it, however, it will jump down the river, so don't bother chasing it. And the only way you can chase it is to fight your way through the Yokai until you reach the lever that closes the floodgate.
The narrow path that leads to the switch is swarming with yokai such as various Warrior Skeleton wielding different weapons from rifles, bows, swords, spears, and axes, Enki, and Gaki.
The path is pretty much straightforward and you'll reach a shack where you'll find the switch that closes the floodgate. It won't be that easy since the switch is being guarded by a Karasu Tengu which you'll need to take care of first before you pull the lever.
Second Shrine: The Canals
Once you've closed the floodgate, you can climb down into the canals where you'll find the second shrine. Make sure you pray at the second shrine before you proceed further since you'll encounter a trap as you reach the marked destination where you'll need to survive and kill four waves of Yokai. Yokai such as Nure-Onna, Gaki, Enki, Toxic Slime, Warrior Skeleton will appear. And for the last wave, you'll face another Karasu Tengu - once you've killed the Karasu Tengu the barrier will disappear and you'll be able to head further to the marked destination.
When you reach the marked destination, you'll notice that the entrance of the cave is being blocked by a mist. As soon as you approach it, a Nure-Onna and Gaki will appear and the Dark Realm will appear. The last enemy that's left is a Waira that will appear after you kill the two Yokai. Successfully killing the Waira dispels the dark realm and the mist blocking the entrance of the cave.
After the battle, head inside the cave and you'll find the Kappa at the end. You don't need to fight it, but instead, speak to it and it will thank you for dealing with the yokai and it'll also mention that it won't steal anymore.

You 100% CAN kill the kappa before it jumps into the water I did it by using a sloth talisman and a bunch of kunai and Fire shuriken
If you use Sneak Thief and Cat Walking, you can run right up on the kappa and kill him at the beginning of the mission
