Usui Sadamitsu Information
Usui Sadamitsu is a military commander from the mid-Heian period. He is one of the Four Guardians, a group that serves Minamoto no Yorimitsu, and is said to have discovered Sakata Kintoki, a fellow member of the Four Guardians, on Mount Ashigara. Many of the folktales that persist about him are related to the spiritual world. For instance, a spirit is said to have communicated with him while he was chanting Buddhist sutras, leading him to the discovery of the hot spring Shima Onsen. He is also said to have been blessed by Kannon Bosatsu, which enabled him to slay the yokai Orochi that haunted the Usui Pass.
The Protagonist is requested by Yorimitsu to assist Sadamitsu on his yokai-slaying mission. However, when the protagonist arrives in the depths of the Great Buddha Hall, a Giant Toad awaits them. In truth, Sadamitsu has enlisted the Giant Toad's aid in testing the protagonist's skill. The Giant Toad is fond of training those with promise, and Sadamitsu has been one of its pupils for years.
While Sadamitsu was able to observe the protagonist's capabilities during their with the Giant Toad, he regretted not being able to duel the protagonist himself. When Kintoki brings the protagonist before him in the afterlife, Sadamitsu finally gets his chance, but is ultimately defeated. Despite his defeat, he is thrilled to have experienced the protagonist's strength first-hand, and has no regrets.
