Yata Mirror Information
A legendary treasure that has been passed down in Japan from generation to generation since ancient times. "Yata" means incredibly large. According to Japanese legend, when the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself in a cave-- thus plunging the world into darkness-- the gods created the mirror to draw her out of hiding by letting her see her own reflection, there by returning light to the world. The mirror was later enshrined in a temple in Ise Province (present-day Mie prefecture). A sacred and intricate replica that was kept at the Imperial Palace ended up in the hands of the Heike clan, but was lost at sea in Dan-no-Ura. They say that it was later retrieved by Minamoto no Yoshitsune and returned.
