Axes and Hammers are Weapons in Nioh 2. These weapons work in conjunction with the Axe Skills skill tree, and both have good default scaling with the Stamina stat. While they both scale with Courage, Axes have higher default scaling with that stat than Hammers and relatively low scaling with Strength, whereas Hammers have low scaling with Courage and scale with Constitution. Lastly, Hammers (and the Wooden Axe, like all wooden weapons) are considered Striking weapons, and do 25% less melee damage and do 25% more Ki damage compared to Axes with the same attack rating. The Pickaxe is unique in that it has the same stat scaling as Hammers, but without the damage penalty. This page covers a full list of Axes and Hammers in Nioh 2 and information about their stats.

The Axe movelist has a special mechanic where they deal 25% more damage to enemies hit by the tip of the hit box (the blade or the hammer head) rather than the part closest to you.

Quick Summary
  • A slow handling weapon with a focus on Ki damage
and strong Individual attacks over sustained DPS.
  • Benefits from high toughness and damage reduction
from heavy armor and the ki damage from Medium armor sets.
  • Axes have 25% more melee damage and Hammers have
    25% more Ki Damage
  • Use Attacks like Stone Mallet, Rumbling Earth, High Kick and Southpaw to Drain Ki and then use Lumber Chop and Mad Spinner to Finish off winded enemies.
Pros
  • Rage is the Second highest attack buff for weapons with
    a minor downside.
  • High Ki damage weapon.
  • Cannot be staggered during many attacks.
  • Highest Break Value among Weapons.
  • Spinning Slide is a parry that works against many Yokai attacks.
  • Lumber Chop and Mad Spinner are both very high damage skills and have strong payoffs for draining Ki.
  • Roar and Stone Mallet can ground human enemies for a large amount of easy damage.
  • Mid Stance Attacks do not reflect off of Guarding enemies.
  • Large amounts of Melee Damage from the Axe skill tree and Mystic Arts.
Cons
  • Slow, with attacks and animations that require heavy commitment.
  • Hard to punish small openings effectively.
  • Many of it's best attacks require a charging up time to get to higher damage.
-Successfully parrying with Spinning Slide or using certain
Guardian Spirit skills like Genbu's can eliminate this.
  • Worst blocking stat among weapons.
-Can be mitigated with High Toughness Stat.
  • Lowest Active Skill Count.
  • Damage is dependent on spacing for many attacks, and this weapon has less mobility options compared to other weapons.

In general the weapon is slow, with many attacks with significant startup as well as a suite of chargeable attacks, and it is not particularly high in damage per second. However, each individual hit does a large amount of damage, Ki damage, and Anima fill regardless of what weapon type you use, and many of the attacks prevent you from being staggered regardless of Toughness. In addition, Lumber Chop is the highest single hitting attack among melee weapons when fully charged, and does comparable damage to Iai Quickdraw II if you release it immediately, and the Ki damage this weapon can deal in general and with Rumbling Earth specifically tends to snowball heavily against Yokai enemies - if you drain their Ki once, it effectively ends the fight against many enemies and some bosses, either from the incredible burst damage from lumber chop and Mad Spinner II or from immediately draining their Ki again after they recover with Rumbling Earth.
Against Human enemies, Axes and Hammers have access to Roar and Stone Mallet, two attacks that tumble enemies if they hit. Hitting them again will ground them, giving you access to a large amount of guaranteed damage. Stone Mallet also has an extremely high Break property, so it destroys blocking enemies very consistently.
This weapon strongly favors heavy armor, as you are likely to take hits while using it and the weapons also have the lowest block stat among melee weapons, so you still want high toughness even if not for the stagger protection.

Below is a list of Axes in Nioh 2, and each Axe has an effect that will ALWAYS be present, no matter what other random bonuses there may be. These effects are listed in the "effect" column. Damage values are not listed since these change by rarity and level, making it difficult to compare them easily. Break and Block are listed, since these do not change with rarity or level.

Every Weapon in the game has Familiarity. The better quality of the weapon, the more Familiarity can be obtained with the weapon, and over time the damage and bonuses of the weapon will improve as the Familiarity increases up to a maximum. This way, using the same weapon over time can yield higher damage than another, even if it's lower level.

Please see Axe Skills for more information on the weapon skills.

There is a kinda HUGE mistake in this page, axes and hammers should be separated into two pages. Even though they share the same tree, they don’t do the same with stats.
Axes scale with Stamina / STRENGTH / courage
Hammers scale with stamina / CONSTITUTION / courage

Missing Shuten Doji’s Club. It is a Yokai weapon and also has the effect to gain Amrita on a strong attack Can be dropped from Shuten Doji, and I believe the smithing text can too, if anyone can be confirmed that’d be great
