Kukai Information

The protagonist encounters Kuhai in a village strewn with corpses near the Suzuka Pass, the latest destination in Kukai's religious pilgrimage around Japan. Kukai is troubled by the loss of his favorite brushes. Relieved that Kukai does not appear to mean any harm, the protagonist offers to find Kukai's brushers for him. They succed, slaying many yokai along the way, and Kukai is thankful for their help. With his brushes returned, Kukai is able to use them to perform the proper funeral rites for the deceased villagers.

Kukai is a Buddhist  monk from the early Heian period. After studying Esoteric Buddhism in Tang Dynasty China, he returned to Japan and famously founded the Shingon School of Buddhism. He made a wide range of contributions to society, including founding a school for commoners as well as establishing Mount Koya of Kii Province (today's Wakayama Prefecture) as the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. His posthumous name, Kobo Daishi ("The Great Teacher Who Spread Buddhist Teachings"), was bestowed upon him for all the good he is said to have brought to the living.

He is also known for being the founder of the Daishi school of calligraphy. In fact, there is a common Japanese saying, "Kobo does not choose his brush," a close equivalent of a "A good workman does not blame his tools"

When yokai attack the Todaiji Temple, Kukai’s place of residence, he encourages the other residents to flee and stays behind to defend the temple alone. The protagonist helps Kukai to drive the yokai away, but Kukai is far from jubilant at this apparent success. He continues to lament the fact that there are still many who suffer in the world,

A letter arrives from Kukai, who has set off on yet another journey. He challenges the protagonist to a duel but is ultimately defeated. In acknowledgment of the protagonist’s strength, he shares his Guardian Spirit with them and praises their mastery on the battlefield before departing for Mount Koya, which will be known for the religion he founded after his death.
