A Formal Match

Mission Start Text

Hey, listen to this! Lord Nobunaga wishes to hold a contest, and as I understand it, the contestants are all retainers who have started serving Lord Nobunaga recently. And that means you! Don't worry though, I'm sure you'll acquit yourself just fine.

This is the perfect chance to show Lord Nobunaga the power of Hideyoshi up close! You've got this, Hiddy, I know you do!

Mission End Text

So you were able to best the Obsidian Samurai. Very impressive. And it seems you got a little something for your troubles. I trust it is to your liking?

All I require from my retainers is that they are strong. Whether they be part-yokai or come from far-off lands does not concern me in the least. I trust that my words will stay with you, Hideyoshi.

A Formal Match Walkthrough

The Contest

So, it seems Lord Nobunaga has set up a contest for all his recent retainers that have chosen to serve him, and looks like you're in it as well. Lord Nobunaga wishes to see who is the strongest amongst his fiercest warriors. When you start the mission, you'll find yourself in the Dojo and you'll instantly see your opponent ahead which is the Obsidian Samurai. Your opponent actually appeared also as a boss in the first Nioh game - when you're ready to fight him, approach him, or start off with an advantage and attack him with an onmyo magic or ninjutsu skill.

First thing you want to know is this boss is completely immune to any attacks that have lighting properties. The Obsidian Samurai is capable of switching between an Axe and a Katana. You'll want to take your time and attack when you see an opening since his attacks are quite heavy and he can kill you in just one combo if you are caught. He also has the ability to call out his guardian spirit to either buff himself or to release a powerful attack. Once he charges up and starts to store electrical energy around him, you'll want to run further away from him since he will run towards you and try to corner you with lightning attacks. To learn more about this boss, you can click here, or check the video guide that is linked below - successfully defeating him completes this mission, and you'll also obtain Smithing Text: Starcutter Sword and the Obsidian Samurai will also give you 1x Foreign Necklace after speaking to him.
