The Gamo clan served both the Oda and Toyotomi clans before later coming to rule over Aizu in Oshu Province (modern-day western Fukushima prefecture). Its most noted leader is Gamo Ujisato, who is also known for being Oda Nobunaga's son-in-law.
Though he was originally retainer to the Rokkaku clan of Omi Province (today's Shiga prefecture), Ujisato expanded his influence during his time serving Nobunaga, eventually receiving a large amount of territory in Aizu after his assistance in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's unification campaign. He demonstrated great aptitude in both military and civil matters, renaming his castle town Wakamatsu and working at its development as well as keeping Date Masamune's Oshu forces in check. The Gamo clan began its decline after Ujisato passed away due to illness, and Aizu fell into the hands of the Uesugi clan.
The Gamo crest features a male and female crane facing one another. It is said to symbolize long life and the prosperity of one's lineage, which is perhaps ironic given Ujisato's untimely death.
